Every Indian will always remember this date - April 2nd 2011. We waited 28 years for the Indian Cricket team to repeat history and bring back the World Cup after beating the likes of Australia and Pakistan on our way to the title. Just before the finals and somewhere during the league matches, I was reading a cricinfo entry by Anil Kumble on why the Indian wins are not convincing enough , the missing element in the team’s victory and how matches should actually be won. Usually the articles after a victory are all gung ho about the team and discussing about the match stats in general. But this one was different; he talked about the psychology or the attitude of a winner. He says that Matches should be won in such a manner that it completely decimates your opponent’s moral, beating them in every aspect of the game. This not only boosts your team’s confidence but also has a significant impact on the mind of your next opponent.
After reading his article, I could recall what Australia did almost for a decade now and how Indian team has to work on their game before they gain such killer instincts. For sure, ICC didn’t want to mess with its revenue this time, so the tournament was scheduled in such a manner that top 8 cricket nations will almost certainly appear at least till the quarter final stages. The Indian team but obviously dragged their way to the quarter finals. Now came the real fight, India Vs Australia and in my mind I had almost given up the hope for a semi final berth of India. But WOW, to my surprise Indians literally routed Australia. They raised their game to a different level altogether and for the 1st time in this World Cup they showcased the character of a true Winner. From there on India were always the favorites to win the title. Then came Pakistan and finally Sri-Lanka and then we won the world cup …yippee…
Although I am a cricket fan and like almost every Indian kid I have played this game during my growing up years. Albeit, we won and this a big moment for millions of Indians, in hind sight I would still want to say that we Indians kind of over-give to this game. Meaning every time there is a major victory all hell break loose in India in terms of money these eleven players make. If you are avid cricket lover you would know that the Indian team is divided into different type of Contracts (from A to D) and the annual payment almost fall in the range of 25lakhs to couple of Crore’s of INR. This is just for playing and not any other marketing campaign they sign up for. I am not saying that we shouldn’t love or show our admiration for cricketers but I would incline to think that it’s almost godly. I can understand BCCI giving money to the cricketer players as it is a private cricket body and is not bound by the government. That’s not the problem, what I fail to understand is Millions being gifted by the state governments. Just a week after the World Cup, I was reading that Sheila dixit has rewarded 1 crore each to the Delhi boys and also gifted them flats. I think it’s unfair to shower the cricketers by the tax payer’s money especially when the other games like hockey have been lamenting for lack of funds for their support. I am pained to see the other sports person suffering and being sidelined from almost every corner. Just last week I was reading one of our National Volleyball player was manhandled and thrown out of a moving train because she refused to get robbed by a bunch of hooligans. She lost one of her legs in this accident and is now struggling for her future life in a rickety government hospital in U.P.
I think the media is to be equally blamed for such a step motherly treatment to other sports. If there is cricket series going on , an entire page will be dedicated to the series with all the stats , and if such a case is with table tennis or hockey or for any other game it’s most likely hidden somewhere in the side news. I think the media has a huge role in enabling other sports persons to be recognized and appreciated by the community. They do have the capability of creating and promoting Sporting Heroes of our country.
An athlete or a sportsperson is like a soldier, representing the country’s worth or power to the global audience and it’s high time that every sports person gets equal love and admiration that they deserve.

ABCD of GRE
The GRE (Graduate Record Examination) is an exam for pursuing graduate (Masters) studies in North America and a lot many other European Countries. However there are certain countries [Australia, Canada, UK to name a few] that do not recognize this exam and in turn admit students on the basis of their performance at the Under- Graduate level(Bachelor’s Degree). It also depends on the kind of specialization one wants to pursue. GRE's umbrella covers a wide variety of courses in the field of Science and technology. However for people interested in Management related courses GMAT is the way to go.My intent here is to give a brief idea about GRE , trying to cover what the exam is , how it is structured and some general first hand information to students who are contemplating international studies.
About the Exam
GRE is mainly centered on testing the general understanding of students in Mathematics and English. The format of the exam keeps on changing but as for past several years it is broadly divided in to three sections. (1) Quantitative Ability (2) Verbal section (3) Analytical writing section. The maximum score you can get in the 1st two sections is 800 and for the last section i guess the maximum grade is 6.0. You will get your score for the 1st two sections immediately after your exam and for the third section it usually takes about 4-6 weeks and it comes with your official score sheet from the ETS.
ETS - Educational testing services is an organization who conducts this exam.
In general the average score for most of the aspirants is :-
(1) Quantitative Ability - around 730- 780.
(2) Verbal section - around 400 - 600.(yup broad variance here)
(3) Analytical writing - around 4.0.
However a score of above 1300 is considered good and should be good enough to clear cut off list of most schools. The admits however depends on lot many other factors (such as Letter of Recommendations , Statement of purpose,publications etc..)and different schools give weightage to different factors while giving admits. All these factors are however internal to the school and not much of this information is publicly available. Application is a topic of a whole another blog so i wouldn't go in much details here.
Overall an average student takes about 3-4 months for preparing for this exam , but again it depends on indiviuals , their are people who have done it in a 6-8 weeks.Take a sample GRE exam online and you should be able to gauge where you stand.
In the following sections I will try to give you some basic information about the 1st two sections. The third one ie Analytical Writing is about writing essays and considering my own writing skills i might not be the best person to talk about this.
Important Information
• GRE is a Computer adaptive test. By computer adaptive I mean the level of problems varies depending upon your answer. If you answer correctly, the next problem will be a little tough and vice versa.
• Try to answer at least first 12-15 questions correctly as this is the time when computer ji :) is pushing up your score so if you falter in the initial cycle then there is a good probability that your score might be affected even if you do well in the remaining section. The markings level varies as you scrap through the paper so it’s always beneficial to reach a good level score before the tricky problems come your way.
• Another important thing to remember is that you must answer all the questions with in the given amount of time .The exam penalizes you severely if you fail to complete the exam. Also be aware that you cannot go back to questions and change your response. So even if you are not sure of an answer make an intelligent guess and move on, don’t be struck with a problem if you think its going to take considerable time. Time is indicated on top of your GRE exam screen.

• There are some typical problems in the exam which has been put only for experimental basis and you don’t have to answer them correctly. These don’t count towards your score and will appear among other problems and there is no way you would know that the problem is put for experimental purpose only. It’s just a way of evaluating if that problem could be put in future exams or not. So answer every problem as honestly as you can.
So the crux is, pace your exam carefully, being extra attentive in the 1st cycle of questions [also they are the easiest ones] and then pacing your speed carefully through the exam.
The following section covers the Quantitative Ability and Verbal section and the views are solely based on my observations.
Quantitative Analysis [Mathematics]:
Basic tenth grade level understanding of mathematics is expected. Engineers usually don’t find this section tough. Even if you have a descent understanding of the subject you should be able to score considerably well in this section. The different parts of mathematics tested are shown in the following diagram. Note that these shows the majority area’s from which problems come and NOT the only ones.
The type of problems is a mixed bag of data evaluation type problems, dealing with calculation related to different type of graphs, simple formulae applications. The problems nonetheless are quite straightforward. Typical problems:-

An important point to note here is that the answer choices are far apart from each other,So if you make an educated guess depending on the data you should be able to guess it right. This point is a little important as sometimes the problem might be quite easy but it will involve some complex calculations and since the exam does not permit any calculators you don’t want to waste time,so try guessing the right answer with a little aptness.
Rest there is thumb rule for Mathematics – Practice and you are well on your way.
Recommended Material:
There are many sample books available for this section in the market and I guess each one is as good as the other. Some good books for Mathematics are from Kaplan series, Princeton Reviews.
Verbal Section [English]:
This section is a little tough, I am saying so as for the majority of the test takers the English score is lower than math’s score. GRE tests you actually on Vocabulary and its usage. The English section consists of Reading Comprehension questions, Synonyms, Antonyms,sentence completion, Word meanings and so on…
For people with good grasp of English vocabulary this section might be easy but in general it requires considerable effort. As I pointed out earlier this section is all Vocabulary and I mean this literally for most part of it. The key here is memorize the words which are GRE test makers favorite (you could get the list from any GRE preparing coaching class) and their usage in different contexts.
Hmmm…The only important thing worth mentioning is to read the questions properly and try to assimilate what it is asking for .Many test takers becomes nervous when they see the clock tick by and in this haziness they don’t read the problems carefully and jump on to the mark the answer. Be cautious there is no going back so read the questions carefully and try to balance your time so the clock don't look like a time bomb to you :) .
Example:--
The problem above says Antonyms which means opposite. The word embarrass and mortify are negative words so the correct answer for this is the 4th one which have positive connotations. Some exam takers might oversee Antonyms and jump on to mark 3rd.
So read the Questions carefully as many exam takers fail to read what the question is actually asking for.

These are just for the taste :).There are plethora of other problem types to explore.
Recommended Material:
There is no limit to vocabulary, the more you could get the better. However to begin with I think - Norman Lewis – Word Power Made Easy is a good starting point. This book teaches you about the very commonly used Word Roots and how different words stem from them. Barron’s Book for GRE is another common reference point; it covers more than 5000 words without any aid on remembering the words. Let’s just call it a specialized dictionary for GRE. As I mentioned the book is quite exhaustive so go for it if you have the time.

A.I.D. entertains Valley with Musical Extravaganza-Sur Aur Taal

Tempe’s Galvin Play House, was brought to life on the evening of February the 21st when Association for India's Development, (AID) Tempe chapter staged a gala musical event - "Sur Aur Taal". The occasion was an evening of foot tapping music and dance from Bollywood and South Indian Cinema as well as a fund raiser supporting two critical AID projects. The 3.5 hour long musical and artistic jamboree featured the very talented singers from Sur aur Taal, Mayuri Ray, Sudhakar Gopal, Sriram Subramanyan, Karthik Raju, Meghna Rajaram and Kumar Subramanian.
The venue was packed with over 350 pepped up music lovers. There were kids, students, young couples and elderly all bursting with energy and enthusiasm. The show opened with the emcees for the evening, Kriti Agarwal and Rupanjana Sengupta welcoming the crowd and thanking them for their support. Both the emcees come with vast experience on handling such shows with Rupanjana directing many Bengali plays and Kriti hosting several such events. The evening started with Mayuri singing a Vandana in honor of the almighty for the wonderful day and then later the emcees took over the show welcoming Sudhakar and Mayuri on the stage. They sang a duet from the famous Mani Ratnam movie Guru – “Ai Hairiathe Aashiqui”.
Mayuri has a gifted voice and is a known face in the valley for quite a long time. She has shared the stage with popular Bollywood singers – Abhijeet and Usha Uthup and has never failed to enthrall the audience with her euphonic voice. Sudhakar, a trained classical singer has been performing for over a decade now and teaches classical music to young children in the valley. Together they raised the tempo for the evening and when they finished, the crowd erupted in a loud uproar and liveliness. It was a perfect start for the evening.
Later Sriram, the most electrifying singer amongst the troupe thrilled the audience with his fantabulous performance on the Song – Guzarish from the recent Aamir Khan movie, Gajini. He has performed at many concerts in Phoenix and his singing style and charm appeals to a wide audience. This was followed by the young members of the group - Karthik and Meghna performing a duet song -“Mellaga Karagani” from the Telugu movie Varsham. With Karthik’s incredible rich voice and Meghna’s extremely melodious voice, their chemistry had the audience gasping for more.
The enthusiasm from the audience was fierce and the energy incredible as the dancers set the stage ablaze with their performances. Just as the audience was about to settle into the hip hop mood, came Kumar Subramanian who carried the audience back into the 60’s with his song- Ye Dil na Hota Bechara from the evergreen star Dev Anand’s movie Jewel Thief. Kumar’s yodeling brought back memories of the late Kishore Kumar, the most famous vocalist in Indian Cinema. The artists performed on a wide genre of songs from semi-classical Mere Dholna to the perky - Desi girl. As the evening progressed they entertained the crowd with a medley of Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Kannada, Malayalam and Punjabi songs. The night was concluded with the song Jai Ho from Slumdog Millionaire composed by the Oscar Winning Music Director A.R. Rahman.
AID, the organization who hosted this fund raiser is a 501(k) registered, non-profit voluntary organization, funding projects and movements that envisions a developed India. These projects are targeted at addressing the various socio-economic problems in India and bringing out a healthy society. All proceeds from this artistic show will directly support two major projects undertaken by AID Tempe, Eureka child and Bihar Flood Relief. Eureka Child is an education program which is supporting children education in Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India.
The AID Tempe executive committee would like to thank all the sponsors for their generosity and support in these difficult economic times, the Sur Aur Taal team for wonderfully entertaining the crowd. Warm gratitude to azindia.com for online ticket sales and Asia Today for marketing the event and helping us to put a brilliant show. The committee would like to extend their appreciation to the volunteers and the audience for making this a great success.

Just Intentions Matter
An old man lived alone in Minnesota. He wanted to spade his potato garden, but it was very hard work. His only son, who would have helped him,was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and mentioned his
situation:
Dear Son,
I am feeling pretty bad because it looks like I won't be able to plant my potato garden this year. I hate to miss doing the garden, because your mother always loved planting time. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. If you were here, all my troubles would be over. I know you would dig the plot for me, if you weren't in prison.
Love, Dad
Shortly, the old man received this telegram: "For Heaven's sake, Dad, don't dig up the garden!! That's where I buried the GUNS!!"
At 4 a.m. the next morning, a dozen FBI agents and local police officers showed up and dug up the entire garden without finding any guns.
Confused, the old man wrote another note to his son telling him what happened, and asked him what to do next.
His son's reply was: "Go ahead and plant your potatoes, Dad.. It's the best I could do for you from here."
Moral:
NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE IN THE WORLD, IF YOU HAVE DECIDED TO DO
SOMETHING DEEP FROM YOUR HEART YOU CAN DO IT. IT IS THE THOUGHT THAT MATTERS NOT WHERE YOU ARE OR WHERE THE PERSON IS.

Why I love h**...

Wrong side of 20's :)
Hey folks,
Today I turned 25, so before anything --Happy Birthday to me J . So, why I am here and specifically why today??? Hmmm…I wasn’t very great in English from my school days and even today I am not: D. So, being extra-ordinary bad in English during my school days I have to redo a lot of my homework .My teachers were always on my head for using the wrong verb (The thing of past was happening in present and the future nowhere existed it was all present…. J) for having a poor vocabulary and whatnot ... One of those homework was to write a diary entry…..Initially I used borrow my friends notebook for that and those who know me will agree :) but later on I was all by myself as their was none of my class mates left, from whom I have not asked help J ..so I started doing homework’s myself and as I did that more and more ..i started enjoying …though my grades weren’t improving.. but who cares as long as I am not failing.... So gradually it became more of a habit….then later when I entered college that habit got died down….my diary disappeared somewhere ….. So, today as I enter the wrong side of 20’s :) I thought of doing things I liked -Writing..…..And after all those homework’s my grammar haven’t improved much so drop a line to correct me.... J
Why today? Their is small story behind this -A very dear friend of mine has this very peculiar habit of starting new things on some important dates. I could still remember that day when I was shaving and he came with his trimming machine. We were fresher’s at that time just out of school and 1st year in college so lots of new things were coming up.. -for guys one of those is beard... :). So I have been noticing this guy never used to shave and he always had this thick beard on his face….and used this trimming machine which was good only to give you a 7 day old shave look….so that day I couldn’t control myself and asked him why ?? why don’t you shave ?, bandiyon pe acha impression padega J ..to this he said ..”I am waiting for the new year to shave as I want to remember the day I started shaving”..and I blasted out laughing…ha ha ha…phew...even today I can remember that day…J
So I borrowed this idea from him and that’s why I am here today….
Who is he ?? ..hmm…any guesses J …
